Project: County Boarders

Our family’s adventurous dream to embark on a journey of exploration and education, visiting each county in the UK.

Project: County Boarders

Our Background

Becky and I have been working (between us) in the education sector for in excess of 40 years. I have stepped back recently and entertained other jobs for a while. We have two children and are becoming frustrated that we are rarely all together. Becky obviously works Monday to Friday, long days as a Primary School Teacher. I tend to work weekends and school holidays meaning that the children are usually with one of us but infrequently both of us. In the past 4 years we have had 2 family holidays but feel that we want to spend more time as a family unit.

So we want to make some time together when we can support and encourage each other focusing on the most important things.

I also get frustrated by the distractions of modern life - mobile phones, social media and consumerisim as well as the commitments to maintaining our house and vehicles. I also find time constraints and schedules restrictive when they are imposed upon us. I would love for us to find space and time to minimise the impact of some of these on our family time.

Our Ambition

Family

  • To focus on our basic needs as a family: shelter, food, water, being together, developing basic skills together, recognising and responding to our bodies needs - sleeping when tired, eating when hungry, exercising and socialising.
  • To foster an appreciation for simplicity: living in minimal space, with minimal possessions and minimal time constraints.
  • To grow more confident in our ability to be self sufficient: making plans, providing for our family, following our dreams and thriving on the road.

Travel

  • To explore our home nation: geography, history, industry and culture.

Community

  • To discover new ways to use our skills and contribute to society.
  • To share our journey that we might inspire others.

What it will look like

  • Living and travelling in a Motorhome.
  • ’Boarding’ in different counties as we travel around Great Britain.
  • Exploring regional variations of common features, activities and experiences. For example: Heritage sites, River walks, parkruns, Adventure courses and food. Maybe trig points and geocaches too.
  • Sharing our adventures and experiences through photography and writing.

In one sentence

Taking our family around the counties of Great Britain living simply but adventurous and sharing our stories.

Our Investment Parameters

Time

We are planning to throw ourselves into this adventure for at least a year - dictated by the minimum length of time that we can offer our house for rent and to allow us to explore throughout the four spectacular seasons in the UK.

We recognise that a year doesn’t give us enough time to visit and explore every county; we would like to complete a parkrun in each county which means being in each county for at least a Saturday. There are more than 52 county areas that we would like to visit.

Funds

Financially, we hope to have a modest income from renting out our family home. Realistically, this will not, alone, provide us with food, desil and campsite fees which we figure will be our biggest expenses.

We hope to discover that people are interested in our story and want to support us in contuing our adventure. We are also trusting that our time travelling will bring us a new purpose and that we will discover ways in which we can apply our skills and find the means to continue our adventure.

Know Freedom
We’re Michael and Fern, last year we sold our house and most of our belongings to travel full time in an American RV with our two dogs Max & Jet 🚐🌎 We were tired of spending of 20’s being stuck in jobs we hated so we started our own business which now allows us to work remotely. Everyone usually waits until they are older or retired to do this and that makes no sense to us so we decided to go for it and start living life now! ❤️ Please subscribe to help us reach 20k subscribers 🫶🏼🎉 Email: knowfreedom444@gmail.com

A British family adventure

The Urban Motorhome
Hey! I’m Darran, I’ve been living on the road full-time in a motorhome since April 2017. I started off in a 2004 Fiat based Swift Sundance and have recently upgraded to a 2008 Renault based Burstner Delfin. It has the layout I was looking for, the space and most importantly, the payload! I’ve learn loads since going full-time time and want to share the good, the bad and the ugly, as well as some hints and tips along the way to help anyone out there thinking of doing the same. Have a good look around and please feel free to leave a comment & get involved :-)
