Beats the Movies
Tonight we were quite daring and ventured out into the ranch on a night drive. I hoped it would pay off and as soon as we drove up to our first male lion, it had. The lion was sleeping in some thicket when we literally pulled alongside him. It's hard to take it all in when you see these animals. I didn't notice how fluffy his mane was but he seemed pretty scary. He let us watch him sleep a while and only when we re-ignited the engine did he spring up. Becky seemed pretty terrifed at that point. He really looked quite big and majestic. We moved on to discover a clan of spotted hyenas - I was impressed although slightly apprehensive. It was dark and there were many of them. They have a bad rep and I couldn't keep track of them all. There were a few babies among them. In the night we also spotted a White Rhino with her calf and a second male lion. White Rhinos are very endangered as are black ones. We have struggled to see any here although there are supposedly 83 blacks and 10 whites. This allows us to tick off another of the big five. Holding out for that leopard now.
